Mr. Ted Cuevas

Open Source Software

Here are some links to very useful open source ("free" - well, not free as in "free candy"). I am a strong proponent of open source and I have solely used open source for 10 years. I use Linux as my operating system and currently use the Linux Mint distribution. I like KDE edition, however, the Cinnamon edition is great and if you have an older computer, the XFCe edition is very fast (even for newer computers!).

Here is a good list started by Dave Hua, and added/edited by myself, of Open Source software (most have versions for Windows, Mac, and Linux):

Free & Open Source Software:

Open Source Software that are "must have" for the Co-Op

LibreOffice     (MS Office Alternative)
The Gimp      (like Adobe Photoshop)
KompoZer     (like Adobe Dreamweaver) - creating your own web pages from scratch.

InkScape      (like Adobe Illustrator) : Great for making vector graphic files for the Laser Cutter. Also for making boxes on the laser cutter, use MakerCase website.

Scribus (like Adobe InDesign/MS Publisher)

Audacity (Audio Editor)
TinkerCAD Online HTML5 3D solid modeling for 3D printing, Learning Circuits, and Coding!

Others that can be very helpful:
KDEnLive (Video editing software that allows multiple tracks. Only for Linux and Mac).
Gantt Project (Project management software - like Microsoft Project)
Paint.net ( for Windows, like Adobe Photoshop)

Google Chrome/Apps

Google Sketch-Up (create 3D models and free for students)
Google Earth (3D Map of Earth, GPS locator)
Graphing Calculator (Graphing Calculator for computer)
GeoGebra (Mathematics Software - Algebra & Geometry)
Symyx Draw (Chemistry - Structure Drawing software)
Blender (Tool for creating 3D graphics)
